Objectives:
After this class, students will be able to:
1. define and apply new vocabulary words.
2. read and anlayze poetry.
3. connect literature to their own lives.
Agenda:
1. Warm-up: Take out a textbook and turn to page 1094. Please write the following words and definitions into your notebook: stupefying, oppressive, succumbed, ostentatious, dementedly. Then turn to page 1100 and complete the vocabulary development questions in your notebook.
2. Complete your NARRATIVE ----> Works Cited Page task from yesterday if you didn't already finish it - 50 points.
3. Read "The End and the Beginning" by Wislawa Szymborska on pages 1099 - 1099. Take a handout and complete the following questions in your notebook:
a. Why is it ironic that the poet uses the phrase "tidy up" to describe what happens after war?
b. What is the implication in the fourth stanza about the media's role in war coverage (lines 18-21)?
c. Who is the "someone" who is referred to repeatedly in the poem?
d. Lines 37-43 refer to the future generations after the war is over. Do you believe that those who don't remember the past are doomed to repeat it? Why or why not?
e. Who is the "someone" referred to in the last stanza? Is this a positive or negative image? Why?
4. Writing Task: Write your own "End and Beginning" poem. For example: When the school day ends and all the kids go home, what happens? When the grocery store closes up at night, what happens? When you turn the lights off at night, what happens outside in your neighborhood? When you step off the bus, what happens to the people that are left? Write a 12 line poem.
Questions and poem are worth a total of 50 points. Due at the end of class!
Homework: Students should continue to work on their senior projects!
