Extra Credit Opportunity: Paying Students for Good School Performance

Please read this article from the New York Times on the pros and cons of giving students rewards for good performance in schools:

What do you think? Would money and other "extrinsic" rewards be enough to entice you or other students to take and do well on things like AP classes and tests? Is there some other reward other than money that you think would be more effective? 20 points extra credit for a well thought-out opinion of 5 sentences on this topic emailed to ms.kingsbury@verizon.net and/or ms.depow@gmail.com or posted to the COMMENTS section below!

would money help students do better in class,i would say yes.I would say yes because every body need money and some students need it more than others.I think that if you was to pay students to come to school a lot of more students would come to school. They will sit in the class an might play around but if you sit in a class long enough with a teacher teaching they would learn something with out even knowing it.then when they get a test like the SAT s it would hit them and they would remember hearing the teacher talking about it and would be able to answer the question correct.

I think that parents should reward their children for doing well in school. i know from past expericenes if i did well in school i would be get money or anything i want and that would make me try to do better in school. if you dont show your child that you care or happy that they are doing good in school. they will not try because they think you dont care. there are other rewards other than money but but money is the best and who dont want it.

I think that giving students money would help them do better in school, but I think it would be a bad thing to do. I think giving them money to make them perform better will just spoil them. It will teach them nothing about the real world. There is nothing wrong with little rewards when the student is doing good. The students need to know that in life they are going to have to do good for themselves and their familes, and not for rewards. A little praise here and there wil do them just fine. All the parents need to do is show their kids that they are proud of them.

I do think that if they pay children money for good grades they will get the good grades, but when they stop giving money all the grades will go too.But it will not help with anything, so paying them is really a bad thing to do.

For most kids any valuable reward would be very convincing to take anything. But to me bribing kids to do anything is dishonest. If the child does not want to do it to benefit themselves through there own terms than obviously it's not that important to them. But myself would be willing and ready without any rewards.
